A common method involves the reaction of alcohols (e.g., methanol or ethanol) with hydrogen sulfide (H\u2082S) to produce simple mercaptans such as methyl mercaptan (CH\u2083SH) and ethyl mercaptan (C\u2082H\u2085SH). In more advanced processes, hydrocarbons react with sulfur to produce more complex mercaptans.
