The main feedstock of this refinery is sour gas supplied from the Tang-e-Bijar gas field. Among the main products of this refinery are natural gas, ethane, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and gas condensates. The natural gas produced by this complex is used for gas supply to Ilam province and other western regions of the country.

In April 2014, the employees of Ilam Gas Refinery successfully carried out the trial production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) through their efforts and expertise. Today, LPG is produced with high quality as one of the main products of this refinery and is offered on the Commodity and Energy Exchange. In this article, we will examine the analysis of LPG from Ilam Gas Refinery to provide our valued customers with better insight when purchasing LPG.

LPG Production from Sour Gas

Sour gas refers to gas that contains hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide. Initially, sour gas is transported from gas reservoirs such as the Tang-e-Bijar field to the refinery. In the primary separation stage, heavy liquids and acidic components like hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) are removed. Then, mercaptans, which are sulfur-containing compounds with an unpleasant odor, are separated from the gas using chemical methods.

In the next stage, the gas is sent to distillation units, where its various components, such as propane and butane, are separated. These components, which are the main constituents of LPG, are liquefied under suitable pressure and temperature conditions, making them ready for storage and transportation. Therefore, at Ilam Gas Refinery, the production of LPG from sour gas creates a product with higher added value.

Analysis of LPG from Ilam Gas Refinery

Density

Density, which refers to the mass of gas per unit volume (measured in kilograms per cubic meter), plays a crucial role in assessing the quality and application of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). It is directly linked to the hydrocarbon composition of LPG. The ratio of propane to butane significantly impacts density; propane, with a lower density, reduces the overall density of LPG, whereas butane, being denser, increases it. This parameter determines the suitable applications and conditions for using LPG, such as domestic, industrial, or automotive purposes, and it also has a significant influence on the design of related equipment like storage tanks and cylinders.

For instance, LPG with a lower density and higher propane content, due to its faster evaporation properties, is more suitable for cold climates or automotive use. Conversely, LPG with a higher density and higher butane content, providing greater heat output, is preferred for warm climates or industrial and domestic applications.

The standard density of LPG generally ranges from 500 to 600 kilograms per cubic meter, depending on the ratio of propane to butane. As observed in the analysis of LPG from Ilam Gas Refinery, the density of the produced gas is 577.762 kilograms per cubic meter. This value indicates a balanced composition of propane and butane, making it suitable for a wide range of applications and capable of delivering optimal performance under various climatic conditions.

Mercaptan

This compound is present in small amounts in the LPG analysis of Ilam Gas Refinery. The inclusion of mercaptan in LPG is intentional and serves safety purposes. LPG is naturally odorless, and detecting leaks without specialized tools is challenging. Therefore, a minimal amount of mercaptan is added to LPG to ensure that leaks can be quickly identified, enabling preventive actions to be taken.

Hydrogen Sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide is a corrosive and toxic compound that poses significant risks to the environment and human health. Additionally, it can damage equipment, leading to substantial costs for refineries. According to the LPG analysis of Ilam Gas Refinery, the hydrogen sulfide content is reported as “Negative,” indicating its absence in the final product. The lack of hydrogen sulfide in the LPG produced by Ilam Gas Refinery highlights the high quality of the purification and refining processes used for this product.

C1 and C2

C1 and C2 are among the lightest and most volatile hydrocarbons, whose presence in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) can cause certain issues. High levels of these compounds increase the vapor pressure of LPG, making storage and transportation more challenging and requiring more robust and costly equipment. Furthermore, the high flammability of C1 and C2 increases the risk of explosion or fire in the event of a gas leak, reducing the product’s safety.

In the LPG analysis of Ilam Gas Refinery, the absence of these two compounds (reported as zero values) indicates a product with balanced vapor pressure, high safety, and better alignment with consumer needs.

How to Purchase LPG from Ilam Gas Refinery

This refinery offers its products through the Commodity and Energy Exchange.
